The VCU Women's Health Research Portal is a web clearinghouse developed in 2012 through funding from the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health. The project’s purpose is to showcase research endeavors focused on women’s health and to connect researchers with each other and with resources that support their transformational work. This portal also serves as an access point for people seeking clinical trials, health care services for women and deeper levels of information about research and researchers at VCU focused on women’s health.

Only in the past 15 years has the research establishment shifted gears to develop studies that focus on diseases or conditions that are most prevalent among women and uncover the therapeutic options that work best for them.

At VCU, a national leader in women’s health research, experts are exploring all facets of research that affect women across the lifespan through basic, preventive, clinical and applied research.

Ranked 79th by the National Science Foundation in research expenditures in the U.S. and designated by the Carnegie Foundation as a Research University (Very High Research Activity), VCU has a robust environment for women’s health research and the promotion of sex differences research.

It is home to the VCU Institute for Women’s Health, a National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health, and the Health Sciences Library,  one of the nation’s largest health sciences libraries with a strong tradition of outreach. In addition, women’s health is a focus area for the National Institutes of Health Clinical and Translational Science Award, administered by the VCU Center for Clinical and Translational Research.

These organizations collaborated in creating the VCU Women's Health Research Portal.

In a companion effort, the VCU Community Health Education Center expanded its online guides about women’s health for lay readers. Serving consumers, CHEC is the only library of its type in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  It is located in the Gateway Building of the main hospital in downtown Richmond, Va. Thorough research guides are also available online.
