Ayomide Popoola, BSc (Hons)

VCU Clinical Psychology Ph.D. Student

I am a first-generation Nigerian-Canadian raised in Toronto, Ontario. I attended McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, where I graduated with my Bachelor's Degree in Honors Life Sciences and a Minor in Psychology, Neuroscience, and Behavior in 2022. Throughout my undergraduate career, I have had the privilege to engage in meaningful, interdisciplinary research at various institutions, including McMaster University, the University of Toronto, and New York University. Following my graduation, I worked as a full-time post-baccalaureate researcher for two years at the University of Pennsylvania and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, collaborating with Dr. Wanjiku Njoroge on the Prenatal to Preschool (P2P) study, investing early child development and maternal mental health outcomes in Black families across Philadelphia.

I will join the Clinical Psychology (Child/Adolescent concentration) Doctoral Program at Virginia
Commonwealth University in the fall of 2024, where I will continue my research on Black maternal
mental health and child outcomes. Specifically, I am interested in the cultural adaptation of mental health interventions for pregnant Black women and exploring collaborative approaches with medical professionals to develop effective, culturally responsive psychological treatments within the Black community, emphasizing primary care and community-based settings. This aligns with my clinical interests in providing research-informed outpatient care to Black pregnant women within accessible community-based settings.

In the future, I aspire to become a tenured faculty member and researcher at a prestigious academic institution, contributing to advancing knowledge and practices in the mental health field.
